Western Newfoundland is too large to explore in a short time; instead select Corner Brook as your base, take daily road trips and do your exploring. In Corner Brook, a small city in the Bay of Islands and at the mouth of the Humber River, you will have access to a natural playground on which to play. A mecca for outdoor enthusiasts during the winter season, the light shines no less bright in summer for Corner Brook and surrounding area.
Corner Brook has a vibrant arts community which comes alive in summer. Stage West Theatre Festival is held in Corner Brook during the month of July; just a two hour drive to Gros Morne National Park, you can take in some great professional theatre at the Gros Morne Theatre Festival as well as take in great classical music at the Gros Morne Summer Music Festival in July and August. From May 15 – 24, 2015, Trails Tales Tunes Festival takes place in Gros Morne National Park in Norris Point, a festival full of music, storytelling and hiking. From August 11 – 16, 2015 take in the Writers at Woody Point Festival and enjoy authors and musicians from across the province and across Canada. One hour south of Corner Brook is the town of Stephenville where the Stephenville Theatre Festival takes place each summer. Grenfell Campus of Memorial University in Corner Brook offers a Fine Arts program and regularly produces fine professional theatre throughout the year.
Deer Lake, about a one hour drive east of Corner Brook, hosts an annual Strawberry Festival each summer and is one of the scrumptious places to visit in Newfoundland. Enjoy a weekend in July in Deer Lake and be filled with music and food!
Another of the exciting places to visit in Newfoundland is Steady Brook, about a ten minute drive from Corner Brook. Spend a day zip lining or take the Spider Challenge to the top of a high ropes course where you can enjoy spectacular scenery with views of Humber Valley and Marble Mountain.
For exercising in the outdoors, the Corner Brook area is one of the best places to visit in Newfoundland for hiking trips of varying durations. The Corner Brook Stream Trail takes just a few hours and gives you a beautiful introduction to the city. Leave Corner Brook, drive for about an hour and spend the day, as the locals say, down the bay especially in Bottle Cove, Lark Harbour where you will experience an easy trail and beautiful coastal scenery. While you are in Bottle Cove, also consider hiking to Cedar Cove where you can camp overnight or come back to Bottle Cove and Little Port.
