You’ll Never Run out of Wonderful Things to Do in Newfoundland!
With autumn falling into place, you might be looking for some interesting things to do in Newfoundland. Well, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador’s tourist attractions are as varied as they are exciting. People come here to explore beautiful landscapes, do awesome outdoor activities, and meet wonderfully friendly people. Here are some of my favorite things to do all-year-round in Newfoundland and Labrador:
Discover an Ecological Reserve
One of my favorite tourist attractions in Newfoundland is found on the east coast of the island: Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve. This is a major seabird colony which I discovered one beautiful and sunny day while exploring along the southwestern shores of the Avalon Peninsula, 200 kilometres south of St. John’s. The rocky bluffs are almost completely surrounded by colonies of gannets, murres, and razorbills.
Visit Two National Historic Sites
Take the ferry from St. Barbe on the Northern Peninsula and travel to Red Bay in Labrador. At the Red Bay National Historic Site, visit the Interpretation Centre and learn about the Basque whalers who lived there in the 16th century. Lying at the northern tip of the peninsula is another amazing tourist attraction in Newfoundland, the L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, where you can discover 1,000-year-old Viking houses made of grass sods. Come see an authentic Viking settlement and the oldest known European settlement in North America.
See Icebergs
Each spring, one of the best things to do in Newfoundland is watching spectacular icebergs drifting down from the cold north to melt in the warm waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Drop into towns such as St. Lewis on the Labrador coast or Twillingate and Fogo Island on the northeast coast for an awesome sight.
Visit an Adventure Park
On the west coast of the province, visit Marble Mountain get active by taking a zip line tour and climbing a high ropes obstacle course called the Spider Challenge.
Visit a Nature Park
On the east coast of the province, you’ll find a centre for environmental education—the Salmonier Nature Park where visitors have a unique opportunity to view Newfoundland and Labrador’s wildlife face to face. Come see our plants, insect life, and varying landscapes like never before.
Roam an Urban Park
Come to Pippy Park in the middle of our capital city, St. John’s. In the summer, there’s camping with great views of the city, Signal Hill, and the Atlantic Ocean. In the winter, cross-country skiing is the way to go!
Visit A Provincial Park
Some of the best tourist attractions in Newfoundland are our provincial parks, including Sir Richard Squires Memorial Provincial Park. About an hour drive from Corner Brook and forty minutes from Deer Lake, Sir Richard Squires Memorial Park—or Big Falls Park, as the locals call it—is situated on the scenic Humber River. One of the best things to do in Newfoundland is salmon fishing, and there’s no better place for it than at Big Falls Park.
