There are many family-friendly places to visit in Newfoundland, and Corner Brook is one of them!
We gave our children the choice of three or four places to visit in Newfoundland last summer. It was really no surprise when their choice of places to visit in Newfoundland was Corner Brook. We asked them why they chose Corner Brook and looking back at their reasons for visiting the west coast city, we could not argue with them.
Our children are lovers of the outdoors. The west coast, in particular Corner Brook, really is one of the ideal places to visit in Newfoundland for families who love the outdoors! When holidaying with children, a little more patience, planning and imagination may be needed to make the holiday a success. For an exciting, educational, and family friendly holiday, the best motto is KISS – Keep It Simple, Silly!
Kids love camping so we camped at the Kinsmen Prince Edward Campground and RV Park just a few minutes outside Corner Brook. For a change of pace, the four bedroom residences at Grenfell Campus of Memorial University offer great accommodations for families. You might consider setting up your camper near Marble Mountain Resort just outside Corner Brook. Fast food restaurants just call kids’ names, right? Well, we found our share of those restaurants in Corner Brook as well as a number of other ‘finer dining’ places.
Located in the center of Corner Brook is the popular Margaret Bowater Park, with its own swimming hole and a walking/hiking trail. The children loved walking along the trail and feeding the swans and ducks. We enjoyed the walk through the Participark which is above Margaret Bowater Park and can be accessed from the Park itself and near Grenfell Campus. Drive or walk up to the Captain Cooke Lookout and get a spectacular view of the city of Corner Brook. Just outside Corner Brook, on the way to Steady Brook, the children wanted to stop at the Man in the Mountain display to locate the face of the Man in the Mountain.
Two of the biggest attractions making Corner Brook our top pick of places to visit in Newfoundland are the ziplining and the Spider Challenge near Marble Mountain. Nothing sparked my children’s interest and excitement like going zip lining. The opportunity to go flying through the air like a bird on a wire had them bouncing up and down, jumping from one bed to the other. Getting all buckled up and into their harness, they listened intently to the guides and then stepping off the platform at the top of Steady Brook falls, they went flying off into the air.
Other activities making Corner Brook one of the best places to visit in Newfoundland for our children included canoeing! Not a long paddle, canoeing Tippings Pond in Massey Drive just outside of Corner Brook was exciting and a great place to safely learn a few things about canoeing. With another family, we canoed parts of the Humber River and travelled about forty-five minutes outside of Corner Brook to Bottom Brook Pond where we camped overnight, combining camping and canoeing for another great adventure. Canoeing to a wilderness campsite, we set up camp on the beach, had a campfire, roasted wieners, marshmallows and lots of fun.
What a holiday! No wonder our children chose Corner Brook as one of their top places to visit in Newfoundland last summer.
