Fun Festivals Offer Plenty of Things to Do in Gros Morne
Summer is almost here; it’s time to take advantage of the good weather, a time to appreciate the culture and traditions of our Newfoundland people. If you are limited in the amount of time you have to explore and discover the creative arts in Newfoundland select a specific area, such as Gros Morne National Park, that is steeped in culture and take in as much as possible. You have done all the camping, hiking, boat tours and other adventures that you want and are looking for some different things to do in Gros Morne National Park. Look no further because the summer music and theatre festivals in Gros Morne are enough to fill all your time.
Within the boundaries of the park, numerous communities host many cultural activities. The things to do in Gros Morne really began this past weekend, May 15, with Trails, Tales & Tunes Walking and Entertainment Festival in Norris Point. Daily walks, culinary events, music and storytelling are some of the things to do in Gros Morne at this festival.
There are lots of things to do in Gros Morne in the historic community of Woody Point on the south side of the Park. The Gros Morne Summer Music Festival takes place in Woody Point and in Corner Brook. The festival begins on July 1st and continues until August 31st with local talent as well as international musicians. For an evening of traditional, classical music, jazz, blues, choral music and musical theatre, go to Gros Morne or Corner Brook and join friends at the Gros Morne Summer Music Festival.
Another festival held in Woody Point is The Writers at Woody Point Literary Festival, highlighting Canadian writing and writers. The festival, August 11 to 16, is hosted by CBC Radio’s Shelagh Rogers.
Come to Trout River in Gros Morne and enjoy a Newfoundland kitchen party every Tuesday evening during the summer for the Passing the Time in Trout River Arts Festival. Hosted by traditional Newfoundland singer Anita Best, this festival offers an evening of music, stories and riddles where the audience is encouraged to participate. Also in Trout River, the 2nd annual Trout River Heritage Bangbelly Festival is scheduled to run from June 30 to July 4, 2015.
When in Cow Head, Gros Morne on the Canada Day Weekend (July 1st) and you enjoy a lobster, come for dinner at the Cow Head Lobster Festival. On Monday, June 1, 2015 Anchors Aweigh Soirees and Times begins in Rocky Harbour and will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening at 8 PM until September. A group of local musicians entertain the audience in this three hour show. So drop into the Anchor Pub at Ocean View Hotel.
Last but certainly not least in the arena of artistic things to do in Gros Morne is the Gros Morne Theatre Festival running from May until September. This festival is a major Canadian Theatre Festival based in the community of Cow Head. It is a year-round full-time professional theatre producing a mix of drama, dinner theatre & music.
