Canada is a very large country with its share of beautiful landscapes varying in make-up as you travel from west to east and into the north. It is made up of large cities to very small towns and every size in between. A large passenger ferry will take visitors from North Sydney in Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques in western Newfoundland. Once on the west coast of Newfoundland, visitors are in for a treat as they make their way to the beautiful city of Corner Brook. As Doctor Seuss said, “Oh, the places you will go”.
As you explore and discover Corner Brook you will be inspired by the opportunities to photograph the beautiful Bay of Islands and the Humber Valley. Let me encourage you to continue exploring and discovering the area with some of my favourite travel adventure stops. Having a great love of hiking, it was a pleasure to take some of the easy walks and hikes in the city of Corner Brook and the town of Massey Drive. Follow Griffin Drive where you will take an easy scenic walk along the Bay of Islands. Enjoy the smell of salt water, the wind in your face, the chance to see small minkie whales and opportunity to photograph great scenery. Look above you and you will see a trail to a very peaceful hiking trail that was at one time the train tracks through Corner Brook.
About ten minutes east of Corner Brook you will come to the small town of Steady Brook, home to Marble Mountain Ski Resort. But before you get to Marble Mountain, take a stop by the interpretative display describing the natural attractive of Man in the Mountain. Look up at the mountain and see if you can find the face of the Man in the Mountain. A 2.5 km hiking trail takes you up the mountain where you will have spectacular views of Corner Brook and Humber Valley area.
Leaving Man in the Mountain, head east where your next must stop spot is Marble Mountain and Steady Brook. As you look at Marble Mountain, you will see the 17 metre high, 360 year old cedar Heritage Tree with carvings displaying our rich cultural history from the Vikings to the Beothucks, to the influence of the European (English, Irish and French) people.
In winter, of course, Marble Mountain is alive with downhill skiers. In summer, Marble Mountain is a great spot for hiking – probably for the more experienced hiker. Get a trail map from Marble Mountain Ski Resort! For more awesome scenery, take the 1 km hike on a forested trail up the Steady Brook Falls. Once at the top, you will get great views of the falls cascading more than 100 ft. below.
While in Steady Brook and taking a look around Marble Mountain, another great adventure spot is right at your feet. Take in a morning or afternoon of ziplining which is accessible from the base of Marble Mountain. If you like to ‘climb great heights’, try the Spider Challenge obstacle course. Great scenery and photo opportunities await you.
